Angono Concert Band Inc.
Angono Concert Band Inc. The Angono Concert Band Inc., formerly known as Banda sa Itaas or Banda Dos, is one of the oldest musical bands in the town of Angono. During the time of President Manuel L. Quezon, the band performed in a special gathering called a “Picnic,” held in Biga, Angono in October 1935. The event was organized by Mrs. Justa Guido and Mrs. Aurora Quezon as a recognition of the musical talent of Angono’s musicians. In its early days, the band primarily used bamboo instruments, locally referred to as “Musikong Bumbong,” which were played during town fiestas and other important community celebrations.
As time passed and the Japanese period ended, the band was revived in 1947 when formal musical training for its members resumed under the leadership of Mr. Daniel Gragera, with the assistance of Sgt. Juan Petiza from the Philippine Constabulary Band. In 1960, however, Banda Dos temporarily ceased its activities as many of its members focused on their work and studies due to the economic challenges of the time. The band was later reestablished in 1979 through the efforts of M/Sgt. Ricardo Petiza, 2nd Lt. Felimon Balajadia (Ret.), and Lt. Col. Fulgencio Gragera, who served as its Musical Director and Conductor. It was during this period that the group was officially registered as an organization under the name Angono Concert Band Incorporated.
One of the band’s most notable performances took place on August 15, 1981, at the Amang Rodriguez Gymnasium in Angono. The concert was held as part of the celebration of Angono’s Independence Day and the birthday of President Manuel L. Quezon, and it was broadcast on television under the title “Concert at the Park Goes to Angono.” Today, the Angono Concert Band Inc. is composed of approximately 80 members, most of whom are young students from elementary to college level. Under the leadership of Khristina Paula Merced, Francis Eric Tangonan, and the band’s officers, the organization continues to nurture young talents who follow in the footsteps of Angono’s renowned musicians. Beyond musical excellence, the band is also known for the performances of its Majorettes and Color Guards, whose baton twirling and vibrant flags add artistry and movement to their presentations. Through its programs and activities, the band remains dedicated to shaping the youth through music and dance, proving that these art forms are not merely entertainment but a lasting cultural heritage of the town of Angono. ![]()
